What this book is
Marketing did not get harder. It got fragmented. The individual disciplines are better documented than they have ever been, but the advice splintered into channel-shaped silos, each with its own gurus and its own private vocabulary, and nobody stayed responsible for explaining how the pieces fit together. So businesses do a little of everything, sequenced by whatever they read most recently, and wonder why none of it compounds.
This book puts the discipline back together as one system. That system is the Signal Stack: five layers, built bottom-up, where Foundation carries Authority, Authority multiplies Discovery, Discovery feeds Audience, and everything is collected or wasted at Conversion. The layers are not a categorization scheme. They are a dependency graph, and the dependencies carry money. The return on any single channel is capped by the weakest layer underneath it, which is why great content on a weak domain loses to mediocre content on a strong one.
Around the stack runs the Signal Loop: measure each layer monthly against a rubric, diagnose the weakest one in a single sentence, then aim the next 90 days at it. Sixty minutes a month. Most teams never do it, because the weakest layer is almost always the least pleasant one, and preference beats evidence unless something overrules it. The loop is what overrules it.
Then the book gets specific for 27 chapters: domain decisions and positioning, how authority is actually earned, search alongside AIO, AEO, and GEO, the local map pack, social and email and cold outreach, the landing page examined inch by inch, events, copy, offers, paid ads, retention, the money math behind CAC and hiring, and what an AI-run marketing department really looks like. Every framework arrives with a worksheet, a rubric, and the failure mode that usually kills it.
What you will learn
- Diagnose which of the five layers is actually costing you money, instead of adding tactics on top of a broken foundation
- Choose a domain and write the one positioning sentence every channel will repeat, then pass the technical floor your site probably fails today
- Earn authority the way machines now compute it: links, citations, reviews, and independent corroboration of your claims
- Work search, AIO, AEO, GEO, and the local map pack as one discovery layer rather than five competing projects
- Build audience you own, so reach stops being rent you pay twice
- Take a landing page apart inch by inch, then rebuild it so traffic stops leaking out anonymously
- Run the monthly 60-minute ritual and the 70/20/10 allocation that keeps the system turning after the enthusiasm fades
- Install the whole stack in 90 days using the profile that matches where you are starting from

From Chapter 1: Marketing Fell Apart
A founder reads that content marketing works and commissions ten blog posts. The posts are decent, but the site’s technical foundation was never audited, so half of them are effectively invisible to crawlers. Nobody built links, so the domain has no authority and the posts rank on page four, where click-through rounds to zero. A few visitors arrive anyway; the landing page asks them for nothing, so they leave anonymously. Six months later the founder concludes that content marketing does not work, cancels the program, and buys ads instead. The ads click through to the same leaky page.
Nothing in that story failed because of bad tactics. Each piece failed because a different piece was missing somewhere else, which is how you know you are looking at a systems problem rather than a tactics problem.
Channels do not fail alone. They fail in chains, and the break is usually upstream of where the money was spent.
Frequently asked questions
Who is Signal & Reach for?
Signal & Reach is for founders, solo marketers, and small teams who own more than one marketing channel and need them to work as a single system. It is also written for agencies and consultants who want a diagnostic rubric they can run on a client in an hour. The book assumes you do the work yourself rather than briefing specialists, and the 90 day install plan includes a starting profile for brand new businesses, established but fragmented ones, and growth-stage teams already running a loop.
What is the Signal Stack?
The Signal Stack is the five-layer framework at the center of Signal & Reach: Foundation, Authority, Discovery, Audience, and Conversion. Each layer makes every layer above it cheaper and more effective, so you build bottom-up and diagnose top-down. The layers form a dependency graph rather than a category list, which is why the return on any single channel is capped by the weakest layer underneath it.
How is Signal & Reach different from an SEO book?
Signal & Reach is different from an SEO book because search is one layer of five, and it is deliberately the third one. Most marketing books start at discovery; this book starts underneath it, because discovery performance is largely determined by the domain, positioning, technical floor, and authority sitting below it. The book then continues past discovery into audience, conversion, copy, offers, paid ads, retention, and the budget math, which an SEO book does not cover at all.
Does Signal & Reach cover AI search specifically?
Yes, Signal & Reach devotes three full chapters to AI search: AIO covers making your site legible to machines, AEO covers becoming the answer itself, and GEO covers visibility inside generated results. They sit alongside chapters on classic search, the technical floor, and the local map pack, because the book treats all of these as one discovery layer. The premise is that being on page one is no longer the goal when the intermediary reads a thousand sources and answers in one paragraph, so the goal is being in the paragraph.
Does Signal & Reach work for a solo founder?
Signal & Reach is built for solo founders first. The 90 day install plan includes a profile for a brand new business scoring near 1 across every layer, sequenced so one person can work Foundation, then Authority basics, then a single discovery surface, without trying to build five layers at once. The monthly operating ritual is 60 minutes, and the book explicitly says it can be a working session with the door shut when the marketing owner and the revenue owner are the same person.
What is the 90 day install plan in Signal & Reach?
The 90 day install plan in Signal & Reach is one quarter of work that gets the Signal Loop turning, and it differs by starting profile. A brand new business builds Foundation in weeks 1 to 3, Authority basics in weeks 3 to 8, and one discovery surface in weeks 6 to 12. An established but fragmented business audits against the rubric first, fixes Conversion in weeks 2 to 6 so it can trust its own measurements, then spends the rest of the quarter on the genuinely weakest layer. The goal is not a finished stack but a baseline score, a weekly shipping rhythm, and three monthly rituals already survived.
How long is Signal & Reach and what does it include?
Signal & Reach is roughly 543 pages across 27 chapters in eight parts, publishing with Blooms Publishers. Beyond the chapters it includes a worksheet library compressing every tool in the book to a page or less, the five-layer scorecard and rubric, a glossary, an expert check, a follow list, and a sources and further reading appendix.
